Among the services being offered by the department store, what the heck is "baby shoe bronz"?

The family of the baby would take the child's first pair of shoes to the store. The store would send the shoes to a firm offering Bronzing. The shoes would be dipped into molten Bronze, and when the metal cooled, the shoes would be mounted on a wooden base with a brass plate stamped with the baby's name and date of birth. The finished assembly would be returned to the store for pickup by the baby's family.

Ah, I see, like a souvenir of when the kid was a baby and had little feet. Cute. I've never heard of this tradition before, is this an Appalachian thing?
