I must admit, looking at the thumbnail I didn't know if I would appreciate this locomotive. Opening it up, and seeing it in a larger view, I can say that I do like this unit. Too bad they are only making it a "cab control" unit, I would think that being the only one in existence that they would fully restore it to operational condition under it's own power. Isn't there some way to put a new power plant in this one-of-a-kind locomotive so it would operate on it's own?

SP had made extensive modifications to this unit converting it into a platform to film the railroad for their training simulator after the unit was retired. Among other things the original nose and forward engine were removed. The museum's website sp9010.ncry.org tells the amazing work that has brought the locomotive to its current condition including purchasing trucks from Europe (that had been reclaimed from SP's other ML's when scrapped.

Very gratifying to see images of the 9010 out and about! The folks who have worked long and hard to get this rare and fascinating locomotive to this stage of authentic restoration deserve a great deal of credit. Hope to see more of their handiwork as the engine progresses!

Like Brian said they still have a ways to go with her and if you would like to learn more visit her website FAQ section. http://sp9010.ncry.org/faq.htm The museum has done a fantastic job on her and I can't wait to see her finished.

It certainly is an ugly duckling that one would have to learn to love. However, being that so much work went into making this engine appear as it once did years ago, that's enough to appreciate this one-of-a-kind!

so this unit was the sp 9799 ? or was it sp 8799 ?.................................

It was SP9010 then SP9113 then SP8799. It is a common misconception that the #1 engine was removed but it was not, it is still in place although it is in very bad condition. The #1 transmission was removed when the camera car conversion took place. Number 2 engine and transmission appear to be in good condition and time will tell about that.
