I assume that the red hose is to do with braking! And like Ron T says in his comment, it sure does look very complicated, I know that we have 4 water gauges, a regulator handle (lever) brake levers, and the reverser lever. But being English that's as much as I know about the controls of any American steam loco.

All of the coal to keep this monster running went through that one little hole? The fireman must have been shoveling like crazy. Very interesting shot.

The Big Boy locomotives (are) were 'Mechanically stoked' the finely graded coal been fed into the Fire Box via a screw feed device. And I believe some of the controls directed jets of steam so that the coal could be sent to the right place within the firebox. They were not manually fired unlike British locomotives. Hope this os of help, to those who are curious about such things!

I sold those type of valves, along with lots of other types, hydraulic, pneumatic, electric as well as hand, lever or screw. On all the small brass type metal ones, gate valves up to 4", the handles to turn the screw were red. No idea why. In forty years of selling the things, never thought to ask, it just was.
