It resembles an HO track cleaner on my model railroad. It certainly is large.

Thanks everybody for the comments! Now, from what I heard, it's a Francis turbine heading north to Hydro-Quebec LG2 power plant. That car was on CN 460 (Montreal-Garneau) on March 10th. Also, when I took the picture, the CN 527 was restricted to 10 mph and the train stopped to each meet with other trains.

As I am not an expert on Hydro power plant equipment, the turbine does not look old to me, it looks like a NEW one. But either way still a good load to capture on (I was going to say film!) a electronic sensor! Well how else would you describe the digital replacement for 35mm film? Great photo.
