If I recall correctly, the last C&O steam ran just the month before your photos.

I rode the N&W J-Class powered Pocahontas, Cincinnati to Norfolk in July 1957. The N&W was virtually 100% steam – I spotted 3 diesels total. Return trip was on the C&O starting at Williamsburg; not a single example of steam power was to be found.
