per horsepower these units consumed the same amount of fuel as any other second-generation loco, so yes indeed, the dreaded crankshaft problem is what knocked these units almost immediately off their pedestal.

Think they did improve on the crankshaft issues later, and other roads (ATSF and SP) favored the '45s over the '40s for much longer. I don't think the UP had the engine numbers in enough places back then LOL.
