| I wonder if the conductor travels with the engineer in the cab, or if the conductor is a "mobile" conductor not assigned to any one train, but to a vehicle assigned to a territory to assist in switching moves and other assignments as needed.

| The travelling conductor are called a Travelling Shunter in the UK!  They travel in (or used to) a converted 20 foot container, with a hole cut in the back to form a window, and they have a basic break controller and a radio to contact the driver, But ride in the cab until they get to the place where they assist in the shunting operation.     Nice shot of what looks like a new loco fresh out of the box!
