So it was actually running under its own power? Awesome shot of this beast either way!

Fantastic, l would love to hear an audio clip of this

Yes, under her own power, modified a bit to work on the 600 volt system. Sean, as far as audio, the unit is pretty quiet, especially with the short and empty train at IRM. It does have a nice horn though.

With the bright flash and clean locomotive, this well-lit Little Joe almost looks like a scale model! The bright Milwaukee orange contrasts so sharply with the dark sky. All this and a semaphore, too! PCA nominated.

It must have been amazing to be there.....there are so few big electrics that can still run. Kudos to everyone at the Illinois Raileay Museum that made it happen!

The Illinois Railway Museum is the largest railroad museum in the United States. It is a nonprofit corporation owned and managed by its membership. Museum management includes a board of directors, elected by the regular membership of approximately 160 active volunteers. Imagine that... Great job, guys (and gals)! Nice to see such a large assortment of historical equipment both on display and operable on regular and special excursion outings. Way to go! And, yes, nicely captured shot of the "Little Joe"!

Is the GG-1 next?
|
| Posted by Kevin The Krazy 1 on September 9, 2013 | |
The GG-1? Very possible for next year! :) And by the way, the term "Little Joe" was a nickname for the Milwaukee Road. The South Shore called these "800 Class" and the GE designation is 2-D+D-2.

While the GG1 is a very real possibility at being restored to operation, do not get your hopes up for it next year. I placed the "Little Joe" on the locomotive data to maintain the accuracy of the previous data base entries, in fact, that is how our www.IRM.org website lists the unit. Thank you all for the photo comments.

aaaahhhhhh! Its an "800"! The "Little Joe's" ran on the Milwaukee Road. Aside from that little complaint of mine, GREAT job IRM! I'll have to make it out there to see her again in all her glory. The last time i saw her in revenue operation was in the late 70's between Hammond and Gary, got a photo too!
