Under CSX Corporate control at this date but still was a subsidiary unit (SBD), CSX switched from the Mars lights to the strobes for cost and maintenance on new orders. By 1986 when CSX Corp merged the subs. to CSX Transportation, they took the position that the Fed. didn't require it so they removed all safety lights until 1995 when Ditch lights were a requirement. And yes some crews complained especially running in the fog but what removed them was about money. Also looking at the fleet, CRR, CO, BO, WM, GA, AWP and you still had locos dating back to SAL days that weren't equipped with safety lights so around half of the fleet had no Mars or Strobe lights. Yes rivet counters the last Chessie order had Strobes from 1980 (mostly the 4400's with CO, BO and WM reporting marks) but that was when CSX Corporate controlled the Chessie roads and Seaboard System.

Actually, none of the 4400 units came with strobes. On the GP40-2s, only 4257-4311 were delivered with strobe lights.
