I don't see any men/women in this picture, but it is a good reminder of the equipment needed to maintain the railroads. As a former gandy on the Northern Pacific, the labor was pretty intensive, requiring a strong back. But as the years went by, the sections became smaller and were phased out with the addition of machines like these. More speciality gangs are used, tie gangs, rail ganges, welding crews, all became smaller and more mechanized. Thanks for the great picture Matt and the love for trains is obvious!
