GM took a wrecked Great Northern F3 and made her the electrical test bed that was the first alternator equipped locomotive in North America. Now for the record the possibility exists that GE and Alco may have had a C630 under test in mid 1963, and that GE may have had an alternator in one of it's fleet of test beds. It is tantalizing to think that one of the UP UM20Bs may have had an alternator in it, I wonder if we'll ever know for sure.

Wow...really cool to see a unit being used for test purposes. Now there are F's with 645E's.

It's always sad to read where something so beautiful has gone to the scrappers, but what in life stays the same forever. Thank you for sharing this wonderful piece of history with us Mr. Vaught.

Too bad it was scrapped, would look awesome in a museum somewhere!!!!
