Can anyone tell me why the Erie Lackawanna needed such large fuel tanks.

I'm assuming it was because the SD45s were gas guzzlers so they needed more fuel tank space.

When The Erie Lacawanna ordered them, they requested a fuel tank that would hold enough fuel to make the trip from New Jersey to Chicago without re-fueling.

Erie Lackawanna ordered the SD45-2's with the 5000 gallon fuel tanks because it allowed them to make a run from Chicago to New York without refueling.
