If this was the lead engine, I know one thing for sure it did not take long for that engineer to decide to become a conductor.

I think it might be in their best interest to utilize that warranty! Coming up to grade crossings always has me on the edge of the seat. Good to hear about the crew, this looks like a nasty collision.

It had to be a trail loco, looking at the direction the handrails are bent behind the cab and the fact the cab wall is on the nose.

It was certainly a trailing unit. Look at the direction of the rear corner pillar of the cab as well as everything else.

It was the trailing locomotive. The train it container "containing" some sort of 2 million pump that had bottomed out on the crossing. There is video of it on the web.
