Imagine having the main line of passenger service between, say, New York to Washington being routed through an alley in either city as tight as this...this line has to be equally significant to this nation. I wonder what sitting on a chair on the curved balcony on this picture's right side just above the engine would be like? Astounding.

I have CN tracks only 50 out my front door. When the trains go by the entire house shakes and the engineer blows the horn all the time, but I will NEVER ever complain about how close they are ever again. At least I can park a car or something else between my house and the tracks with no risk of damage.
