What’s with those screen grids across the cab windows? …is that some kind of protection from vandals?

Paul those where in place due to a problem of kids throwing rocks at MBTA trains in the late 70's and into the early 80's. There were a few high profiled incidents of engineers injured by rocks being thrown at trains.
