Nice picture, sure seems like they have a lot of power for not much train I count four engines for maybe 40 or 50 cars. Very interesting that they use so much HP for trains these days.

I think they did that so the crew didn't need to run around the train to head back where the train originated.

This picture is deceiving. They for sure don't need that much power for THIS part of the trip. However, what you can't see, is what they've just come over. The Sierra Nevada Mountains are not foothills...a very steep climb from Sacramento California all the way to Boomtown, Nevada on the eastern slope, before it drops down onto fairly flat ground near Reno, Nevada. It's a very long, slow trip because of the grades they traverse to get over the Sierra Nevada Mountain range.
