Absolutely stunning! Either the locomotive or the car are great enough but both together in a shot so fresh it looks like yesterday, is sensational.
Wally Abbey is not a well known name today, (probably because his best work was done during a few short years while he was employed by Trains magazine) yet his work ranks among the best rail photography ever done. Thank you for posting this shot I had not seen before and now so glad I have.

Thank you for the kind words, Dennis. Abbey also did some exceptionally good photography while he was working for the Soo Line from 1959-1970, but very little of that material has ever been published. We are excited to be able to bring more of his work to light!

Great photo, two of the most wonderful trains of all time in a great photo. Thanks for posting this great picture.

Our postmodern world lacks the emotion and passion that even utilitarian things like trains could once evoke. What a classy way to get from here to there.

It's really too bad that there aren't many photographs of the Milwaukee RR Class F-7 Hudson steam locomotives available via the internet. The F-7 steam engines (series nos 100-105) were stunning art deco steam engines. They were a sight to behold.
