Holy cow searchlights. That sure has changed! Good shot, Mr. Sink. I guess 153 has maintained some traditions: in 1970, I'd guess it ran with SD35s. Now it's a trio of Dash 9s. Thanks for posting so much history from a home line.

The story about those searchlights is that they were installed at El Interlocking by Southern as a result of the new Freeman Mill Rd overpass which was built across the tracks, the bridge from which this photo was taken. That's the old Freeman Mill Rd underpass beneath the railroad. The searchlight signal at this location allows northbound trains to see the signals when they're coming beneath the new overpass. You can see the "normal" 3-light Southern signals on the southbound signal at Elm in the background. As the commenter above alludes, Train 153 was Southern's hottest mainline train between Potomac Yard and Atlanta.
