I've often wondered why the builders of the railroad would put seemingly needless curves in the track. Was there a need for the curve near the end of the train?

Could have been where the water was shallowest or where strips of pre-existing land were. I'm with you - it never fails to amaze, the way lines were laid.

If the tracks are laid on the section line that could be where there is a township change. Like on many roads.

I have trains-watched at Trempealeau many times and never saw things from this angle. Beautiful shot !!! Thanks.
