Couldn't let this one go by without commenting on it. When I was a girl growing up down in the San Joaquin Valley, the only trains I saw were steamers, and almost every one back in those days had a caboose hung out on the tail end. That was long before DPU's came on the scene. The water tower sat within 25 feet of the road crossing in the little town of Kerman, and we would often get 'caught' having to sit and wait until they had filled the engine tank with water, which I loved seeing and certainly didn't mind the wait because that meant I would get several waves from the engineer while he was sitting there waiting. I love pictures of the old cabooses. Thanks for sharing this Mr. Belmont.
