I really don't understand the whole remote control engine thing. There is still two crew on the train so why not let them run it from the inside, instead of having to stand and be exposed to the elements? Just curious.

The crew on a MOW train can stand off to the side and have a better view of where the cars need to be lined up, which is helpful if there isn't a crew by the tracks to guide you. But I suspect the main reason they do this is because it gives them practice in case they fly RC planes when they get home.

They don't have to be paid engineer rates.

By remote control. It is a money saver by not having to pay a train crew to operate this engine. It can be ran by the MOW dept. Similiar to having a MOW Heavy Duty FORD trucks pull gondolas. This engine can do more then the H/D trucks they often used in the past pulling gondolas.
