Why the necessity of a RR here? Derail here and kiss ol' butt goodbye!

This line serves the Potrerillos copper smelter, which processes ore from the El Salvador mine. Originally Potrerillos had both a mine and a smelter, and most, if not all, of the rail loads would have been outbound, downhill towards the coast. At some point, the economically recoverable ore at Potrerillos ran out, and the smelter remained to process ore from El Salvador. El Salvador is on the opposite side of the very deep canyon shown here. So, the railroad now serves to haul the concentrate loads uphill to the smelter, from a pipeline transload on the canyon floor, as well as the outbound products.
