What a rare catch. The second unit is an Oneida & Western SD40-2 that was used in unit coal train service on the L & N. Ron Flanary wrote an excellent article about the train in Trains Magazine a few years ago.

Absolutely beautiful! 1988 perhaps?

The O&W unit sure is a long way from home!

Thanks for the comments guys. And good catch by Mike account the photo was indeed taken in 1988, not 1998. If so, that would have truly been Epic!

I always felt this was the iconic BC Rail photo location. Wonderful shot, Mr. Repp.

I found the issue of Trains from 2007. After they stopped running the unit coal trains, BCRail bought the SD40-2s from Shamrock Coal Co. and this one just hasn't been repainted yet.
