If I'm not mistaken, I seem to recall that this was about the time Conrail put all of the then retired GP30s & GP35s back into service. I remember seeing a number of 30s & 35s on the Shippensburg Secondary back in the mid 80s.

When the locomotive supers came around, the hostlers hid this engine so it could not be sent to Juanita for a repaint. This is only one of several explanations. I also like the explanation about this unit sitting on a forlorn rip track waiting to be scraped. All of a sudden Conrail has a power shortage, and this GP30 fires up OK and passes a brake test. Go for it Conrail!
