Would the correct year be July 1987? The NRHS held the convention that year in Ashville and Norfolk Southern leased her from the ITM and also had N&W #611 and N&W #1218 there as well. They would have been directly behind her on the line. Great photo nontheless.

The 587, 611, and 1218 weren't in Asheville for the 1987 NRHS Convention. That one was the one where the 611 and 1218 did a bunch of side-by-side running outta Roanoke and then doubleheaded back.
The 587, 611, and 1218 were all in Asheville for the 1989 NRHS Convention.
