Hard to believe this was 46 years ago. Thank you for posting this wonderful look back!

A great time in railroading history. Someone, in the past on this website, made a comment this was a "dark, boring" time in railroading (bankruptcies, deferred maintenance). Wrong! Two reasons it was exciting.... (1)MANY different rr names on diesels, freight cars AND passenger trains, (2)NO GRAFFITI!

Awesome shot and colors. I agree with Wayne. 1960-1985 is my favorite era of railroading. I'm always commenting about how much I miss those days. So much diversity and color and again no graffiti! Thanks for posting.

I don't like Graffiti so I will agree there and more railroads would be cool but the way I look at it is some of peoples favorite shorelines & regionals come off of big mergers.

I've been trying to find more pictures of this unit. As you said, it's almost like it was never seen again. There are plenty of photos from the 90s after being rebuilt, but practically none as 949 (I think I have four pictures total), and zero clear and helpful pictures of it as BN 2226 before being repainted. According to BN historian Daniel Holbrook (who has an amazing site on SmugMug), this unit was repainted in May of 1973. The only picture of what might be 2226 in red is photo ID 435558. It's hiding behind some SD40s, and only the numberboard is visible. Oh well. The hunt continues.
