Odd to hear of a railway line in Europe to be abandoned (unless being closed for a new high speed line) whats the reason for this line being scrapped?

That is a complicated story but the main thing is that apart from the trains of the museum it was only used by just a few freighttrains and they are running now via Utrecht Centraal. Other reason is that those freighttrains had to run from and to Arnhem and the policy is to move all that freight to the Betuweroute.

This train looks like the Portuguese Allans

That is not so strange because the NS-DMU's 61-106 which were built two years later were based on these EMU's. They were built at Allan (Rotterdam) and were also used as base for the Allans for Portugal. So they are family...

Interesting to hear this line is now closed, I was lucky enough to travel on it when I visited the Netherlands in July. Will the regular NS Sprinter service continue to run but from the north instead?

Yes, via Blauwkapel. The Heimwee Expes will make its turns to and from Amersfoort
