Something that brought about these "Quad" ore car sets was winter operation problems. I can remember being in the Chicago area prior to the development of these sets. I saw several iron ore trains operating in very cold conditions, and almost every glad hand air connection on these trains was wrapped with silver "duct tape" in an attempt to retain air pressure. I think the upper hose connection allowed for the hopper doors on all four cars to be opened at once.
