I was lucky enough to chase this train on the C & O's Lexington, Ky. sub (now abandoned). The coal provided at Russell, Ky. was very bad indeed, so bad that the train was reported several times on the CB radio (remember those) as a barn fire ! When the Chessie Steam Special reached Winchester, Ky. there was a wait for the Local Lexington, Ky. switching units and crew to go east and drag the train into Lexington yard. The coal provided at Lexington was good, however the trains return to Ashland, Ky. that night was very late indeed.

Excellent back side shot of the Chessie Steam Special in all of her glory! When I rode behind her several years earlier, she didn't hesitate putting on a good show - plenty of stack talk, smoke and steam. Brings back memories!

Since the Chessie Steam Special and Chessie System 2101 is my favorite train ever, I'm completely in love with this shot! Its definitely my pick for PCA!
