Citation and Count Fleet are two of those famous race horses to appear on Frisco E8s. The above mentioned horses were Kentucky Derby winners.

Note the head end with plenty of mail/express. That would change in 1967 with the elimination of mail on passenger trains, ending this vital revenue stream for a train such as this. Great photo Steve, looks to have been taken right about the state line.

Did the E series have 2 deisel engines in each? Hence, the 2 stacks on the roof?

I got to see this train once, not that long after this photograph was taken, from the parking lot of the long-gone "Shopper's Fair" department store off Glenstone St. in Springfield, MO. The "Frisco", like other railroads, had a special spur for its Springfield-bound passenger trains, splitting off its Kansas City main (where the latter crossed and now merges into the St. Louis/Tulsa line) at west Nichols street on the city's west side, then heading from downtown east across Trafficway and Cherry merging to the Memphis/Birmingham stretch. The west side tracks were pulled up some time ago, while the east side still has some light industrial traffic with the tracks gone prior to the junction. Even then the east side usually got switcher traffic so the sight of this accelerating out of downtown was still fascinating. Elvis Presley made his first post-fame visit to Springfield riding (and being interviewed during the stop) on this very train.
