Is one semaphore for the Main and the other for the siding? If so, how can they both show "Clear" at the same time? George B.

This photo is actually about 60 miles south of Raton at Wagon Mound I believe.

I corrected the distance to sixty miles.
One the first comment, I noticed the positions of the semaphores when I took the photograph. The tops of the rails on the main and the siding are shinny. Both are used. I would think the semaphore on the right would be in the horizontal position or red but is not. I have no explanation for this. I have read that the semaphores are operational and there are no other signal devices to substitute for the semaphores. Operational they seem to be. This was the position of all the semaphores I saw between Las Vegas, NM and Raton, NM. Perhaps they are turned on several minutes before the train arrives and off afterwards. That would save on maintenance costs which are minimal. There only two daily trains using it. I saw rail on main 1 in the Raton station that was dated from 1934. They don't change things much on this line.

That part of the line is still ABS/TWC, most likely with spring switches. The siding signal would not show "stop" unless the block ahead was occupied.

I dont think there would be any sort of problem with the signaling, they dont have to be concerned with it if only one train uses the line.
