John, a wonderful photo of what appears to have been terrific train ride. Your location looked familiar to me and I looked at some of my own photos taken in the area. Train #17 is on a sweeping curve near milepost 587, just west of Grassy passing siding. The summit at Cedar (5180 ft. in elevation) is about five miles away. Thanks for sharing this gem.

This photo captures the thrill of riding and photographing out of the dutch door, which the Rio Grande tolerated, unfortunately it is a thing of the past. Most of us that are old enough to have had that opportunity will never forget it and feel sorry for the younger generations that won't get that wonderful experience. The Rio Grande Zephyr was the best passenger train in the country for that activity. Thanks for bringing those memories back to life!
