Nice picture with the depot, landscape, and of course the train. Did short trains like that really need that much power (even in the mountains) ?

The substitute GP30 was likely added to maintain the timetable schedule between SLC and Denver.

Solid Gold--this shot is a very rare view of the RGZ with somthing other than an F9 leading. The Grande did their best to keep the train pure with passenger power and only had a freight unit pinch-ht when they had no other choice. Even more interesting is that a GP30 is the leader, not a hotrod GP40 variant. Simply 'Grande!

Ohh man....at the time a trackside fan probably would have loathed that GP30 on the point, but now it is just priceless!

We despised it at the time, Blaze. In fact, we cancelled chasing it east to Soldier Summit due to that 'ugly' freight engine on the point.
