Considering Amtrak's shaky financial condition, the AEM7s may, at best, be rebuilt. Even if not rebuilt I venture a guess they will be around at least another ten years. The bridge, is another matter. Structural concerns and having only two tracks on it would seem to indicate that Amtrak will be able to carry out this project. Amtrak badly needs to relieve this bottleneck and potential safety hazard.

Actually, 70 Siemens "Amtrak Cities Sprinter" replacements have been ordered and are expected to start service by 2013. A study was funded to look into replacing the historic bridge but no funding is available to actually do any work.

The bridge was built in 1906 by the Pennsylvania RR and its structure was built using granite from Port Deposit. The bridge I believe is structurally secure as it has withstood the test of time.
