Your average Hollywood explosion is a gasoline can or two with a small amount of det cord to make it blow up. Unless the engine was right on top of it, a small explosion like this probably wouldn't even damage the paint.
Note the people sitting in the field. It's hard to tell how close they actually are, but none of them appear to be wearing any kind of protection. They probably didn't need it.
