I've also run in to these on a few rare occasions, but I'm not too enthusiastic about bringing my camera down there to catch one myself!

Awesome catch. Mass transit is often overlooked by fans but provides such an essential form of transportation for so many.

If memory serves me correctly, these engines are somewhat unique in that they are designed to operate either by their on board diesel motor, or through third rail pickup. The latter for being when in the tunnels itself, and the former in situations where there is no traction rail, or the power is disabled.
