Many thanks to Ron Flanary for sharing this wonderful image of spotless L&N Es in their original scheme. The lead E7 has just had louvers added for additional engine room ventilation, while the trailing E6 is still as-built. For a time, the road applied silver trucks to this scheme, making it even more spectacular. Many of the ACF cars built for those two trains ended their days in commuter service, some on the New York MTA lines out of Grand Central Terminal, NY, and others on the New Jersey DOT's North Jersey Coast Line out of Penn Station, NY. A few others went to the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie's sole suburban service out of the Steel City. All three of those commuter operations had a common corporate connection, Penn Central.

If this is the Humming Bird where is the RPO that was usually near the head end of the consist?

The Humming Bird didn't have an RPO until much later in its career---maybe the late '50s. Even then, it didn't carry one on the "south end" of the L&N system---Mobile-New Orleans.

Thanks for posting this spectacular shot. Very beautiful paint scheme and train.
I wish GE and EMD would style passenger power in this league.
Thanks for posting so many outstanding images over the years, and best regards.

What an elegant livery, very classy with the script lettering. I can imagine that with silver trucks it would look even better. Shame they eventually went to the grey and yellow which wasn’t really awful until one see this.
