C40dash8 is probably right. I've always wondered how telegraph lines went through tunnels and this photo answers the question.

I'm surprised none of the swimmers are asking that trainman for a beer. As we all know, it's in the Rule Book, every caboose is to be equipped with flags, lantern, fusees, a broom, tool box and a case of cold beer.
