I feel like I'm looking out the window of a time machine. Fantastic shot, John!

Well this is a new one...

Some pictures make you feel old. This one makes me feel not old enough - wish I'd had the chance to be there for this. Thank you so much for sharing the image in this space.

Nice perspective, composition, and overall scene, John. Well done and congratulations on your SC tag!

I love it! Having seen the famed owl faces of the Blimps in photos, it really brings it home to finally see this angle. The fact that you are on the move, with the automobiles and street running just makes is all the more fantastic. I course I hate the fact you were so good at this from the moment you picked up the camera and it took me 50 years...

Great shot, John! Most old(er) shots are cool because they are old but this one's a winner in addition to the fact that it's an older capture. Nicely framed and captured -and crisp as if it was taken yesterday.

"The day before Cal's last trip to the Rose Bowl". Ugh.. Clearly it's been FAR FAR TOO LONG!! GO BEARS!! Excellent photo. Straight out of the time machine indeed.

I agree with Noah's sentiment. My first thought was that it looked like a window into the past. Fascinating image.

That's a shot you won't see often! I wonder how many car/interurban accidents happened on these "open roads"?

I rode the Pacific Electric's "Blimps" on their last week of operation in April 1961, when the Long Beach line shut down for good. I wasn't very old then, but I distinctly remember these portholes and views such as this even after more than 50 years! (Thanks for bringing back the memory, and making me feel ancient in the process...)

That's just wonderful.

Thanks, John- wonderful shot! I was 11 and growing up on the East coast when this was taken but scene is so reminiscent of Greater Philadelphia, too. Makes me feel young again, not old- a wide-eyed kid, sneaking a peek out the motorman's window!

I love how the car is just following the train like it is just another car in traffic. I too would have to wonder how many accidents happened. And I also love the "used" car lot off to the right.

Talk about a portal to the past...wow.

Neat view, and subject matter!

I am old enough to remember trams in Glasgow, and cars in the position of the black car trying to overtake on the outside when the tram stops. Trams coming the other way fairly brought home to car drivers that trams had real useless brakes. This is a wonderful photograph, full of nostalgia. Over here we have books of old photographs, "Old Lenzie", "Old Glasgow" lots and lots of them. I am scared to look in them in case I see a photograph of me!

Does anyone know if the current Los Angeles-Long Beach line runs in this particular street, at this location, today?

This is one of those images of yesteryear where I can't help but say: "Thank you for taking that shot." In an age when you didn't get instant results on an LCD, you took a risk with an unusual shot and ended up leaving us with a window on time. Nicely composed, nicely exposed and very deserving of that SC badge!

A very nice time capsule Mr. West! Thanks for sharing.

Fantastic shot! The diverging line of the tracks and wire really draw your eye into the image over and over again. Looks like were looking north on what was then know as American Ave, present day Long Beach Blvd. If you'd like to see what wreck looked like on this avenue, have a look here: http://www.pacificelectric.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/BWh_MTA_1537_Wreck-crop.jpg. A viewer to the site provided many previously unknown details to this accident that eventually because case law in California. - Steve Crise
