This was after the J's had entered freight service as proved the brakeman's doghouse on the tender deck. Nice shot; I wish I could go there now.

They might have covered some freights then, but not many. The Js were still handling the six daily interline trains between Monroe, VA and Bristol, VA (for Southern Railway), and would until January 1, 1958. This scene is probably the engine on number 26 taking water (the eastbound Powhatan Arrow), while the train holding short in the distance is number 15, the westbound Cavalier.
