Great photo Nick.
The R in the number indicates that the loco has been rebuilt to WDM3A standard (getting 3100hp out of the 16 cylinder ALCO engine) and this particular shade of orange is a recent countrywide scheme to indicate that these have not just been rebuilt as WDM3As, but also have microprocessor control.

That's a fantastric scene - I love the trees, the curves, the water tower and the distant mountains, not to mention the orange Alco. Well caught. A real slice of the Railroad Life in India.
