This is an absolute classic of a photo, and the first I've ever seen in color. Although difficult to discern, the body is a very dark blue, which was, with the addition of a white cab, GO's initial color scheme. From black and white photos, I had no idea the handrails were red. These Geeps were built on SD-40 underframes, and even then needed shortened noses, the only EMD/GMD hoods so equipped, to accommodate all the machinery. The group survives today on Amtrak in MOW and switching service, rebuilt as GP38-2 equilavents. But they are still equipped with HEP plants for use as emergency passenger protection power if needed.

Indeed, colour shots of these units in this pre-GO, early GO scheme are rare. The trailing RS-3's don't have much longer to run either, all being gone by 1969. Another gem, Doug.

I love the red handrails. It really sets off what is a rather muted paint scheme otherwise.

Allow me to correct myself, trailing B-B trucked RSC-13's.

Crazy... I wish I shot these more once Amtrak picked them up...

I bet those were pretty strong Geeps then. Do you know how much horsepower they put out?
