John, they actually do sound nice. Deep humming - like the old engines do. And you know that a class 87 hauled uphill train approaches you even 10-15 minutes before you see it because the humming is all over in the air. Not on this picture though, because the train ran downhill from Gilgil all the way to Nairobi, but on the other trestle picture: listening to the sound of the approaching diesel with an uphill train, slowing coming closer and closer was really a nice Kenyan experience... I will go there again in autumn 2012 and will spend even more time with the diesels! There are not too many trains running but what you get, is excellent! Michael.
