It really does look like a train set. I wonder what the loop is for.

Wow. A Lionel train layout only super sized. :D

What is the point of the oval?
|
Reminds me of Miami-Homestead Speedway. Nascar with trains.
|
The oval could easily be for waiting mile long cross country trains. The longest trains can wait in a much shorter area. If the train starts on the NW corner of what we see, and wrap around the track, the train can be far longer than the trains in the distance, without blocking traffic.
|
Can you imagine a really long train actually wrapping around itself? Now that would be a sight to see!
|
This used to be the Los Angeles Coal Export Terminal (long story in itself)... didn't know they completely leveled the place!

See, I told you my model train is just like the real thing! Seriously, I'm curious about the loop, too. A loop of track actually takes up more real estate than a length of track as can be seen from all the unused area in the middle while a siding has very little unused land. Of course, the open area here may have been was available in the market when it was needed; a long length of siding might not have been. As for "looping" a train around itself, that can be done but unless there's some sort of overpass or underpass, which I don't see in the photo, there's no way a train can exit the loop as it would foul the crossing required for its own exit. I believe there is a similar loop in Nebraska, but it is used to load or unload long lengths of coal trains without uncoupling or backing. I don't see the requisite facilities here.

Nice shot. Pacific Harbor Line calls this the LAXT Loop.

Here's an older picture. Looks like it was some sort of plant of some sort....

Great aerial photo. The first thing I thought of when seeing the picture was, another new NASCAR track. keep up the good work.
