This particular SD24 was one of three former EMD SD24 demonstrators that were built and painted to Southern Pacific specifications in an attempt to interest the SP in the new model. The SP did not bite, and the trio, as well as the SD24, high nosed, prototype, all were purchased by the UP. Distinguishing characteristics of the "SP" trio were the nose-mounted headlights (the red Gyralight has been removed,) the flare-top cooling fans, the lack of a UP-standard winterization hatch and the SD18-style bar grill.
