A great photo of an intersting loco. I've just been spending an evening looking pictures of these locos. Although I knew about them, my interest was rekindled by a picture I'd seen in an enthusiasts journal of one of these locos being transported on by truck through a local village near to it's birth place in Stockton-on-Tees in the early 50s. It is remarkable that they worked for so long in Australia when similar Crossley engined locos supplied to British Railways and CIE in Ireland were a disaster. I'm now trying to find out if anyone has video of the working as I understand the Crossley engine was loud and distinctive. Do you know if any of the preserved survivors are still operable?

Hi John, there are 3 XA class that are potential runners, two at the Rail Museum at Bassendean (XA1402 and XA1405 plus static X1001), one of which does run on the Hotham Valley Railway, there is a short video of XA1401 on Hotham http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQ3u7byqPNc
