Chase, this is an absolutely gorgeous shot, and it evokes memories of the Abingdon Branch (although the mixed train didn't operate at night----unless it was terribly late). Technical note, however: steam locomotives do not "idle." The engine's safety valve has lifted, so a plausible explanation is the fireman had a tender full of green coal, and they had to stop here to blow up steam pressure while he rebuilt his fire. Come to think of it, that would explain why the mixed train was so late this day. :)

This is just a wonderful photograph ! Very well done sir. Both forms of transportation in this picture have water tanks, N & W #382 of course has it's tender. This is an Amish farm so it stands to reason that the blue water tank at the right edge of this photo does get pulled by the farmer's horses from time to time as needed. Please note Steel Wheels on both forms of transportation.
