Amtrak trains that were pushed into and out of Chicago Union Station, were those than ran down the Illinios Central mainline. Southbound trains would back westward on the old Burlington mainline, where they could connect with the St. Charles Airline, reversed direction and ran east to reach the IC's lakefront trackage, where the trains headed south to reach Carbondale, IL and New Orleans, LA.

Nice pointing out the conductor holding the air hose. He attaches this to a device which serves as a horn, which he's required to blow as they cross Lumber Street (just behind the photographer). As far as I know, this method is still in use for trains repositioning south of the Canal Street Wye (visible to the left of the train).
