Why exactly is the crew giving water to random people?

Zack said they are railfans. Looks like a case of generosity and good public relations to me.What are you, a lawyer looking for a law suit??

I've had water tossed to (not at :-) me before. On a hot, humid day, it is greatly appreciated to have a generous crew give away their water to those of us that are just there for play and can go home and sit in our A/C at any time.

Anyone even know if CSX allows this?

I don't see how it is a problem.
When I was taking photos of the South Shore in mid-July the crew asked if we wanted water.
Seems like an act of courtesy in my opinion.

Thank you for the explanation, it's nice to see crews interacting well and generously with the people around them. I've been made sour by a few railroaders who don't.
