Hard to believe it went from this to 10 car trains packed to standing room only. Amtrak's future would be a bright sunny day now.

In NY Central's heyday this train ran 16 cars with a twin-unit diner and parlor-observation car on the rear.

This is also very much the way the "New England States" looked in its last years running Boston - Albany. It would often leave South Station with but a single snack-bar coach.

Minimalized and marginalized with one coach and one motor. A short train with one Penn Central day left cries out "save me.” This was no way to run a railroad and in Chicago no less. Penn Central really knew how to get the train gods angry.
